NMPA identifies topics based on member feedback and sources speakers who are subject matter experts to offer relevant information that enhances fundamental knowledge and skills about propellers, propeller repair and the business of running a repair shop. Pre-Convention Workshop:
Propeller Repair Certification Training & Exam
10:00am – 2:00pm The Basics of Propeller Repair & NMPA Suggested Operating Guidelines
NMPA members will get an in-person review session in preparation for the NMPA  Outboard and Inboard Certification written exams. This session will offer a review of the study material and the NMPA Suggested Operating Guidelines for propeller repairs. Scheduled time is 10am – 2pm, includes lunch and will allow one hour to complete the exam following lunch.

Welcome Reception
All attendees and exhibitors are invited to our Welcome Reception to network and kick-off the Convention with a few cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. It’s a friendly and fun reunion for members from across the country, the continent and overseas to reconnect ahead of two days of propeller shop talk and educational sessions.

Session 1:

Analyzing the Repairability of New Propeller Designs
Some of the latest propeller designs are amazing feats of engineering and provide performance beyond expectation when used in the right set up on the right boat, but when it arrives at the repair shop, the question ’Is it repairable?’ depends on more than just the damage inflicted. This panel discussion with industry propeller manufacturers and repair experts will discuss the repairability of some of the latest propellers being produced for today’s boats.

Abrasives – Effectiveness vs. Efficiency & Cost Control
All prop shops try to maximize the full useful life of abrasives and strive to ensure that efficiency and cost controls are achieved without compromising high quality propeller repairs. Hear from abrasive product experts and from the best propeller repair pros how to manage consumables like abrasives without sacrificing time and money.

Session 3:

Adjusting the Pitch – The Debate Continues
If you’re adjusting the pitch of a propeller for that boater who’s back again looking for you to squeeze more performance out of his/her prop, then this session will be worth your time. There is much debate on this topic and with 100 propeller pros in a room you’ll get at least 201 opinions. Join us for Adjusting the Pitch for an interesting and healthy discussion and debate.

Session 4:

Polishing – The Finish is All About How Your Start
Your customers expect their propellers to work flawlessly in addition to looking shiny and after you’re finished with the repair. Just like most other aspects of propeller repair polishing is as much a science as it is an art. Top polishing experts will discuss the finer details, tips and product tricks for dazzling your customers with the high-end finishes.

Session 5:

Hydraulics for Outboard Propellers

No one questions the hard work of propeller repair, particularly the job hammering a propeller back to spec on a pitch block. Many ask if the answer may be hydraulic tooling for outboard prop repairs. There are limited instances of individually developed specially customized hydraulic tools for outboard propeller repair and this session will discuss the cost effectiveness of and technical practical application of hydraulics.

Improving shop operations and being more efficient in areas such as the in-take and delivery of repaired props creates opportunities for enhanced customer service and profitability. Learn about how technology is being used to support day-to-day operations and participate in a discussion on how to find and retain repair techs in a limited marketplace of talent.

Propeller Balancing Techniques– Static vs. Dynamic – Measuring Process Effectiveness
Whether it’s just a preference, a question of tools and equipment or a higher level of trust in one method over the other, the decision to use static or dynamic balancing sparks a conversation. Join this session for a dive into the deep end of a discussion on the effectiveness of each process.

Session 2:

Inventory Management in the Amazon Era
In the past, it was simple. Shops kept some inventory, customers came in to shop, distributors provided inventory for dealers to sell. In the age of Amazon and online sales, inventory management is an even greater challenge; profit margins are squeezed; and lines between dealer and distributor are blurred. This session will look at how shops can face the realities of the internet age and navigate the new world order of inventory management in the 21st century.

Roundtable Discussions

This will be a facilitated break-out session with groups sharing experiences and insights. Goal of the session will be to produce valuable take away action items.

This new optional hands-on demonstration day will give NMPA Convention attendees a first-hand look at techniques and methods of grinding, blending and polishing using 3M products. Pre-registration is required for this event.
